Enugu’s anticipated modern transport interchange project, set to transform Market Road into the Enugu Central Station, commonly referred to as Holy Ghost, is now underway with the commencement of compensation payments to property owners.
This significant step was announced by Dr. Obi Ozor, Enugu State Commissioner for Transportation, indicating the government’s commitment to the development.
Governor Peter Mbah initiated discussions on the Enugu Central Station in October 2023, stressing its role within a broader infrastructure plan aimed at easing traffic congestion, enhancing safety, and modernizing transport hubs across the state. Drawing parallels with global examples like Dubai and Singapore, Mbah underscored the necessity of revamping Holy Ghost terminal to align with modern standards.
Following consultations with stakeholders and property owners, formal notices were issued, signaling the government’s intention to utilize the site for the transport interchange. The Railway Property Management Company Ltd., acting on behalf of the lessor, confirmed the release of railway land for the project, outlining compensation terms for affected parties.
According to a letter addressed to leaseholders, signed by the Director of Land and Estate Services, A.O Abdulsalam, the Enugu State Government committed to compensating individuals based on independent valuations of their structures on the land. Additionally, affected businesses were offered temporary locations during the construction phase, with a provision for the right of first refusal upon completion of the interchange.
Enugu State Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Obi Ozor, affirmed that affected parties have been allocated temporary spaces, with compensation payments scheduled to commence promptly. Despite the significant financial implications, Ozor emphasized the necessity of mitigating inconveniences during the transition period.
Stakeholder engagement sessions have garnered positive feedback from various entities within the transport sector and beyond. Chief Chidi Anyaegbu, Chairman/CEO of Chisco Transport, commended Governor Mbah for prioritizing critical infrastructure development, foreseeing substantial benefits for the transport industry. Similarly, Chief Arinze Ekwenibe of Onitsha South Mass Transit lauded the government’s collaborative approach, highlighting the project’s potential to stimulate economic growth and job creation.
As construction progresses, the Enugu Modern Transport Interchange promises to usher in a new era of efficiency and convenience for commuters while revitalizing Enugu’s urban landscape.
