In a significant development for Nigerian football, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially named Finidi George as the new head coach of the Super Eagles.
This decision comes after a rigorous selection process, with George emerging victorious over Emmanuel Amuneke for the coveted position.
George brings with him a wealth of experience, having served as an assistant to José Santos Peseiro for 20 months. Following Peseiro’s departure after the Super Eagles secured the runner-up position at the Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire in 2023, George took on the role of interim coach, overseeing the team during two friendly matches in Morocco last month.
Now, George faces the immediate challenge of leading the Super Eagles to success in two crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and Benin Republic.
These matches, scheduled to take place in Uyo and Abidjan respectively, are vital for Nigeria’s campaign, as they currently trail behind Rwanda and South Africa in Group C standings.
With just over five weeks until these must-win encounters, all eyes will be on George as he prepares the team for what promises to be a fiercely contested battle on the road to World Cup qualification.
