Electricity Transformer Blast Claims Six Lives

Tragedy struck the Kabong Central Community in the Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State on Saturday, October 14, 2023, as a suspected electrical explosion resulted in the loss of six lives and left two individuals critically injured.

The incident, which transpired around 2 am, also ignited a fire in the vicinity, causing widespread panic and destruction, including damage to local shops, with estimated losses reaching millions of naira.

According to sources within the community, the explosion at a transformer sent shockwaves throughout the area, further intensifying the distress and fear experienced by the residents.

In response to the tragic event, the Spokesman of the Plateau State Police Command, DSP Alfred Alabo, confirmed the incident, expressing his condolences to the affected families. He stated, “Yes, we are aware of the incident at Kabong Central, which claimed the lives of six people and left two critically injured”.

One of the injured individuals is currently receiving medical treatment at Bingham University Teaching Hospital, Jos, while the other is being attended to at the Jos University Teaching Hospital. As I speak to you, I have visited the family of the deceased on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Julius Alawari, to condole with them.”

DSP Alfred Alabo continued, saying, “However, preliminary reports suggest that the fire incident was caused by an electrical explosion in the area. But I can’t definitively state what actually transpired, as an investigation has already commenced to uncover the exact cause of the fire incident.” The local authorities are diligently working to ascertain the root cause of this tragic incident that has left the community in mourning and raised concerns regarding electrical safety in the region.
