KEDCO Faces Backlash Over Unremitted Pensions

KEDCO

Kano, October 16, 2023 – The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) found itself in the midst of a major upheaval as the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), Kano Chapter, initiated a strike over allegations of non-remittance of pensions spanning 72 months and the purported victimization of union leaders who have raised their voices against this injustice.

In a resolute display of dissatisfaction, the NUEE members descended upon KEDCO premises today, paralyzing its operations as they demanded accountability from the company’s management. Comrade Ado Riruwai, the Northwest Chairman of the NUEE, spearheaded the picketing.

“We cannot stand idly by while our hard-earned pension funds are withheld by the management of KEDCO,” said Riruwai, addressing the gathered protesters. The situation, he declared, was intolerable, and the workers were determined to fight for their rights.

Riruwai went on to accuse KEDCO’s management of subjecting workers, particularly union leaders, to a series of discriminatory actions for daring to speak out about the ongoing pension crisis. He likened the management’s behavior to imperialism and insisted that it violated the fundamental rights of workers as protected by the Nigerian Constitution.

In addition to the pension issue, the NUEE also leveled accusations against KEDCO regarding the alleged refusal to provide adequate medical care for its employees. The union decried this as another instance of the company’s disregard for the welfare of its workforce.

The standoff between the NUEE and KEDCO has drawn the attention of the public and authorities alike. As the picketing continues, the workers are determined to see their demands for pension remittances and improved worker conditions met.

KEDCO management has not yet released an official statement in response to the allegations and the ongoing protest. However, it is clear that the labor dispute has escalated to a point where resolution will likely require mediation and dialogue to find a solution that satisfies all parties involved.
