South East Governors Push for Nnamdi Kanu’s Release

In a significant move on July 2, 2024, the South East Governors’ Forum issued a communique detailing their latest resolutions and actions.

One of the key highlights of the communique is the Forum’s resolve to interface with the Federal Government to secure the release of Mr. Nnamdi Kanu. Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been in detention, and his case has been a point of contention and concern within the South East region.

The communique, signed by prominent leaders including His Excellency Senator Hope Uzodinma, His Excellency Dr. Alex Otti, His Excellency Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, His Excellency Rt. Hon. Francis Nwifuru, and His Excellency Dr. Peter Mbah, underscores the importance the governors place on addressing the grievances of their region and fostering peace and stability in the area.

In addition to the pressing issue of Nnamdi Kanu’s detention, the Forum also addressed other important matters. They expressed their condolences to the Government and people of Abia State, Ebonyi State, Imo State, and the South East region, as well as to Chief Ogbonnaya Onu’s family, on the passing of His Excellency, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu.

The governors welcomed a delegation led by Former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, and His Royal Majesty Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, Obi of Onitsha, who visited in a show of solidarity.

Deliberations also covered the reviewed report of the South East Security and Economic Summit held in Owerri on September 28, 2023. The governors agreed to implement key aspects of the report pertaining to security and economic integration, reaffirming their commitment to actionable plans that address these critical issues.

Furthermore, the Forum resolved to visit the President to discuss pressing concerns specific to the South East Region, highlighting the proactive steps being taken to ensure the region’s development and stability.
