In a statement issued today, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announced that the Labour Union’s deliberate shutdown of the national grid has caused a nationwide blackout. The grid went offline around 2:19 AM on June 3, 2024.

The disruption began earlier, at 1:15 AM, when the Benin Transmission Operator, part of TCN’s Independent System Operations unit, reported that union members had forcibly removed all operators from the control room. Some staff members were reportedly injured during the confrontation. As a result, the Benin Area Control Center was completely shut down.

The union’s actions also led to the shutdown of several other transmission substations, including Ganmo, Benin, Ayede, Olorunsogo, Akangba, and Osogbo. Additionally, certain transmission lines were opened due to union activities.

The power generation sector was similarly impacted, with units at various generating stations forced offline. The Jebba Generating Station had to shut down one unit, followed by three more due to high frequency and system instability, leading to the national grid’s shutdown at 2:19 AM.

TCN began grid recovery efforts at 3:23 AM, utilizing the Shiroro Substation to attempt to restore power through the transmission lines supplying bulk electricity to the Katampe Transmission Substation. However, ongoing union obstruction continues to hinder the recovery process nationwide.

“We will continue to make efforts to recover and stabilize the grid to enable the restoration of normal bulk transmission of electricity to distribution load centers nationwide,” said Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, in the statement.
