Enugu, Nigeria– The Enugu Good Governance Group (E-3G) has lauded Governor Peter Mbah’s administration for its exemplary fiscal prudence, naming it the most efficient among Nigeria’s 36 states in the first quarter of 2024.

In a statement released by its National Coordinator, Comrade Odinaka Okechukwu, E-3G praised the governor for his administration’s low recurrent expenses, as reported by Open Nigerian State, a BudgIT-supported platform. This recognition underscores Governor Mbah’s commitment to transparent and accountable governance.

According to the Open Nigerian State’s budget implementation report, the 30 states with available data collectively spent N986.64 billion on recurrent expenditures in the first three months of 2024. These expenses include salaries, allowances, travel, and utilities. Lagos State led with the highest expenditure at N189.62 billion, followed by Delta State with N68.68 billion.

In the South East region, Ebonyi State topped the list with N14.95 billion, followed by Abia State at N10.92 billion and Anambra State at N9.91 billion. Notably, Enugu State recorded the lowest recurrent expenditure at N7.51 billion, not just regionally but nationwide. Imo State’s data was not available.

Comrade Okechukwu highlighted this achievement as evidence of Governor Mbah’s fiscal discipline and dedication to effective governance. “This is a clear testimony to the high level of fiscal discipline in the Governor Mbah Administration, and a demonstration that accountability, transparency, and traceability, which he mouthed as guiding principles in the administration of public funds were not mere campaign buzzwords,” he said.

Governor Mbah’s 2024 budget of N521.5 billion allocates a significant 79% (N414.3 billion) to capital projects, with just 21% (N107.2 billion) earmarked for recurrent expenditure. This budgetary approach reflects a strategic focus on development and transformation across the state.

E-3G also praised the governor’s proactive engagement with citizens, noting his various town hall meetings, media engagements, and a notable two-hour interaction on X (formerly Twitter) Space on May 30, 2024, where he discussed his administration’s policies and projects with younger citizens.

The organization encouraged Governor Mbah to maintain this trajectory of prudence and prioritize the welfare of the people above personal or political gains.
