Ebonyi State Governor, Engr. Dave Umahi Announces first index case of Covid19 in the state.
The governor who gave a detailed account of the index case however said that there was no cause for alarm as the situation was under control.
Umahi added that the index case is a commercial transporter who uses his Sienna to transport food from Abakaliki to Ondo, Southwest Nigeria.
The driver is 31 year old man from Ukawu in Onicha Local government area of the state. He carries food items from the South East to Ondo state and after selling his goods, convey passengers back to the South East.
Umahi noted that he has this year made two journeys, one on the 29th of March and returned to Ebonyi on 1st of April and on the 12th of April.
He visited Ore in Ondo state and was unable to get passengers to the East which prompted him to be sleeping at motor parks and filling stations in the area.
He made his way back to the state through Ishiagu in Ivo LGA to Afikpo North LGA and down to Okposi in Ohaozara Local Government Area of the state before he was apprehended by the council Chairman who handed him over to the police and members of the State security outfit.
Governor Umahi noted that as part of government policy to bring every suspected case to the Abakaliki Township stadium for quarantine and testing revealed that the suspect was brought to Abakaliki alongside others, but he was the only one who tested positive after he was tested twice.
He announced that others numbering over 300 persons who illegally entered the state through the boundaries and were arrested and quarantined, all tested negative adding that to ensure proper check, those who tested positive would also be tested again to ascertain their status.
Umahi hinted that the commercial driver has been isolated at the isolation center in Abakaliki and called for calm.
