An expert has provided insight on the claims by many Nigerians that the fire outbreak at the office of the accountant general of the federation aims at financial irregularities.
Dr Joe Abah who is an expert on Institutional Reform, Public Policy, Political Economy through his twitter handle said “the fire did not affect our data centre, which is actually fully backed up,” “We have been using computer to process and back up information for the past 11 years.”
“Data for distributing money to the poor is held in the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs. It is electronic and not in a file. Payment records in the Office of the Accountant are on the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System. It is backed up remotely”.
“You must load bank account numbers into GIFMIS before you can be paid any money from government. If the account number is wrong, the system will reject it. Payment instructions from GIFMIS go direct to banks. GIFMIS is backed up. Banks have records of who was paid”.
“All government payments are done using the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS). GIFMIS is backed up real time offsite. No payments are made by paper”.
“In case you didn’t know, no money is kept in the Office of the Accountant General. Monies are kept in the Central Bank and the OAGF’s electronic data is backed up offsite in one of the states. Don’t worry about #COVIDー19 money. Worry instead about the safety of fellow Nigerians, Dr.Joe Abah added.
